Abstract

The article raises the question of the continuity of ethical commandments between the Old and the New Testament. Are the commandments of the tora as such still binding for Christians or does the commandment of love as πληρωμα νομου (Gal 5,14; Rom 13,8-10) lie at the basis of a new and independent ethical system? Although a brief survey of the Pauline tradition produces little evidence of Paul or his theological disciples refering explicitly to the tora as being authoritative in ethical questions the author argues for a criteriological use of the commandment of love within the law. Rom 11,18 could provide the theological argument that for example some OT social laws still express God's will for Christians and are to be done by them, too.
