Abstract

This article compares the presentations of important figures in the history of Israel from Sir 44–50 and Hebr 11. Both authors attempt to give the readers opportunities to identify with these figures. However, the authors address different audiences: Ben Sira focuses on a primarily younger generation at the beginning of their personal careers, Hebr addresses a community under pressure. While Ben Sira hopes to give orientation for a fruitful life, Hebr aims to empower the readers to keep their faith and to resist if necessary.
