Abstract

Barbara Schmitz uses the term textexterne Verankerungen to recall the significance of the real author’s living environment (Lebenswelt) for the better understanding of a narrative text. This article deals with the question if narrative spaces are easier to understand when there are archaeological or historiographical testimonies. Are the historical facts a limited but helpful tool or are they of no use at all for narrative analyses? The example of 2 Kgs 25,4–5 shows, that not every historical information is of value or might be used (uncritically), but in detail questions they are of special help. What the historical facts cannot do is to explain the full potential of a narration, so that the limits declare this knowledge as source and tool but not as interpreting authority itself.
