Abstract

Origen’s interpretation in his first and second homilies on Exodus constitutes Egypt as a completely negative space. Egypt is the devil’s realm, the Pharaoh being the devil/the evil himself. In contrast, for Origen the Church is the space which is oriented toward the eternal and the heavenly things. Christian life is the way within the Church to progress to the heavenly homeland. Martina Löw’s “Raumsoziologie” and Michel Foucault’s “Heterotopos” are considered as helpful concepts to analyze Origen’s ideas about space in the interpretation of Exodus.
