The Quotations of Isaiah in the Gospel of John

Abstract

In the Gospel of John quotations from Isaiah are used in order to interpret Jesus’ public ministry (Joh 1–12), his mission from and his unique relationship with God as well as the puzzling fact that Jesus’ signs sometimes provoke unbelief. The Prophet Isaiah furthermore supports and enriches pre-existence Christology that is characteristic of this Gospel.
