Abstract

The article examines Psalm 129 from an embodied reading perspective and sheds light on how the voice of the Psalms expresses the experiences of oppression and violence through body metaphors. Phenomenologically, the body forms the basis for perception and communication with the world, making it possible for the human being to understand the world. Language is not only a means of communication but also expresses an existential understanding of the world. In Psalm 129, the voice of the psalm states experiences of violence, which leads to self-empowerment. Accordingly, language also contains dimensions of power. The enemies lose their power over the voice of the psalm through God’s righteous action, which, therefore, reveals alternative concepts of power.
